*Do you know what a Routing Information Protocol is?

Suggested page: Routing Information Protocol Explained

Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is a distance-vector routing protocol. It chooses the best path based on hop count, which is the number of routers a packet passes through. Fewer hops mean a better path. But if a route has more than 15 hops, it marks it as unreachable.

While that may sound restrictive, RIP's strength lies in its simplicity. It was made for easy setup and smooth operation in small to mid-sized networks.

RIP's history traces back to the late 1970s when Xerox created a routing system for its early networks. It gained traction and was officially standardized in 1988 with RFC 1058.

Each RIP router keeps a routing table showing known networks and hop counts. Every 30 seconds, it shares this table with neighbors. If a new route has fewer hops, the router updates its table, adding one hop to reflect the distance to its neighbor. This ongoing exchange helps all routers build a map of the network.
